The LEAP-SE consortium is excited to share the outcomes of the first stage of its 2025 Joint Call for Transnational Research and Innovation Projects. This milestone marks a major step toward fostering sustainable energy collaboration between Europe, Africa, and associated regions.
A Strong Response Across Continents
An impressive 172 pre-proposals were submitted during the first stage of this call. This enthusiasm reflects the growing momentum and interest of sustainable energy innovation. Among the many results shared, it is worth noting that:
- 34% of projects are coordinated by African institutions, with a total of 624 partners
- 66% are led by European or Horizon Europe-associated countries, with a total of 534 partners
- In total 1160 partners have taken part in the pre-proposal period
- 40 countries: 12 European and HE-associated countries (including 8 participating to the call) and 28 (including 6 participating countries to the call) 6 from Africa.
The participation of EU/EU-associated and AU countries reflects the call’s strategic aim: building long-term, balanced partnerships to tackle energy challenges on both our continents.
Focus Areas: Energy Solutions for a Sustainable Future
The submitted proposals address a large spectrum of critical energy topics corresponding to the 7 multi-annual road maps:
- Assessment of Renewable Energy Sources and integration of RES in sustainable energy scenarios;
- End-of-life and second‐life management and environmental impact of RE components;
- Smart stand‐alone systems;
- Smart grid (different scales) for off grid application;
- Processes and appliances for productive uses (agriculture, mobility and industry);
- Innovative solutions for priority domestic uses (clean cooking and cold chain);
- Production and utilization of Green Hydrogen.
These thematic priorities align with the broader goals of LEAP-SE: accelerating access to affordable, sustainable, and reliable energy. More information are available here.
