HyAfrica project has been active on multiple fronts. Important fieldworks were conducted in Morocco and South Africa, with the probing of hundreds of points for natural hydrogen presence. The target areas were Ain Bni Mathar in Morocco and Mpumalanga province in South Africa, the results were very promising with the detection of multiple H2 seeps in both target areas.

The project work was also presented in multiple events  with the participation of Mr. Alae-Eddine Barkaoui in the lectures for PhD students in energy, environment and smart systems held in Oujda, Morocco in June  2023 with a presentation “Towards a next generation renewable energy source : a natural hydrogen solution for power supply in Africa (HyAfrica)”. Mr. Júlio Carneiro also represented HyAfrica in the H-Series conference held in Maputo, Mozambique in June 2023, with the presentation “HyAfrica, a natural hydrogen solution for power supply in Africa”. Naledi Kotsedi, an MSc student at the University of Limpopo, presented the poster “Determination of Natural Hydrogen in Nkangala District, South Africa” at the International Partnership for Hydrogen and fuel cells in the Economy (IPHE), hosted by HySA and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Convention Centre Pretoria in April 2023. Beside these divulgation endeavours HyAfrica was also cited in the German press through LIAG and IEE Fraunhofer partners, with participation in multiple interviews : in the newspaper “Der Standard”, in the newspaper “Der Spiegel” and in the YouTube channel Breaking Lab. A meeting between HyAfrica, JUST GREEN AFRH2ICA and the Clean Hydrogen Partnership occurred to discuss possible synergies and paths for collaboration between projects.

The LEAP-RE consortium gathers 83 African and European partners covering a wide range of sectors: education/research, private sector, policy and funding. Together, they are building a long-term partnership of African and European stakeholders committed to fostering research and innovation for the development of renewable energy.
